#381: R.I.P Yasmin Ahmad.

This seem like an overdue post, I know. But I've only found out about Yasmin Ahmad's passing this afternoon. Apparently, she passed away while I was in China.

Just that day on Thursday, I was talking to Ming Feng in the KTM about her latest movie, Talentime and her as if she were still alive. God, how oblivious was I about her recent passing! Those who were standing around within earshot, who knew about her death must have thought, "damn, this girl doesn't even know her "favourite" movie director just passed away two week ago. What a FAN"

As a student who hopes to major in Digital Film and Media Studies, Yasmin Ahmad has been one of the most influential movie directors alongside Steven Spielberg. I remember picking Yasmin as "The Person I Admire Most" for my Coat of Arms during ENGL 101 during my first semester in college this year. I have always hoped to meet her one day. Now, I won't get the chance to ):

Yasmin have been regarded as a head-strong, powerful and brave movie director for filming movies that speaks out the controversial issues in Malaysia.

Though I've only watched Sepet, Gubra and Mukhsin, I can tell that it's not an easy task directing and filming the movies she did.

I have not watched Muallaf, which was and still is, i think, banned in Malaysia. How ironic that a purely Malaysian-made movie is banned in its home country. How ridiculous. (Okay, not banned. The cencorship board of Malaysia had to impose quite a number of cuts on Muallaf, Yasmin gave up on fighting on it and made up her mind to not have the movie screened in the Malaysian cinemas. They even threatened to ban Sepet before it was released. Tsk.

I have yet to watch Talentime. Am really looking forward to watching that too.

Yasmin was working on two international films before she passed away. Wasurenagura and Go, Thaddeus! Whatever will happen to both films now. I do hope someone as good as her finishes 'em on behalf of her. I'm sure she'd like that.

Yasmin Ahmad was truly an inspirational woman. Its a waste that she has to go at such an early age. Malaysia still needs her.

Some advertisements by her which I really love:
Most of them never fail to make me cry or laugh.
